The Gen1 Learning Community Peer Mentor is an academic year-long student leadership position designed to provide mentorship, professional development, and academic support to first-generation mentees in the Gen1 Learning Community. Peer Mentors co-facilitate a weekly 0-credit hour course with the Gen1 Instructors as well as provide academic and social opportunities for mentees outside of the classroom. Each peer mentor is assigned 12-15 mentees within the course.
Gen1 Peer Mentors spend about 20-28 hours per month on Gen1-related tasks. These tasks include (but are not limited to):
To apply to become a Gen1 Peer Mentor students must:
- Be enrolled as a full-time student at Texas A&M University
- Maintain at least a 2.0 GPR at the end of spring semester after submitting an application
- Be able to fit a FYEX 101 course section in their schedule for the fall and spring semester
- Be able to complete at least one year of service
- Be willing to enhance classroom facilitation and management skills
- Be a resource to help transition first-year, first-generation student from high school to college
- Be committed to advancing first-generation student success at Texas A&M University
Gen1 Peer Mentors spend about 20-28 hours per month on Gen1-related tasks. These tasks include (but are not limited to):
- Peer Mentor team meetings
- FYEX 101 preparation and facilitation
- Development/Enrichment activities
Peer Mentor Requirements
- Co-facilitate a weekly 0-credit hour course with a Gen1 Instructor.
- Dedicate 5-7 hours a week preparing and planning for class and community events.
- Participate in summer training, fall and spring retreats, and the Gen1 Peer Mentor selection process.
- Host study halls in the Routh First-Generation Center throughout the academic year.
- Must interact with mentees outside of the classroom for a minimum of 20 hours throughout the semester.
- Utilize Navigate to log their mentee interactions and peer mentor meetings.
